The King captures my younger sibling, Artemis Tercero (they/them), as I’ve seen them evolve over the years—stronger, braver, and truer to themselves. Growing up only 15 months apart, we spent our childhoods playing dress-up, cars, and Barbie. Despite the passage of time and all the changes, I still see them as my little sibling, the one I shared those playful moments with.
Their journey toward self-expression in safe and comfortable environments is something I value deeply as an older sibling. I’ve witnessed their struggle and resilience in embracing their identity. The King reflects not just their growth, but the bond we continue to share.
This photograph, initially part of a lighting experiment for a class, captures a moment of that ongoing transformation—one that reminds me of their courage and our shared history.
